ALBAT Aptitude Test Study Guide 2026: How to Pass the Math & Reading Sections

What Is the ALBAT Aptitude Test?
The ALBAT Aptitude Test is the same Electrical Training Alliance (ETA) / NJATC Aptitude Test used by most IBEW outside lineman programs. It is not an electrical knowledge test — it measures basic academic skills needed to succeed in the apprenticeship.
Test Format (Two Sections):
1. Algebra & Functions (Math) — ~33 questions, 46 minutes
• No calculator allowed
• Covers: solving equations, inequalities, word problems, number series, basic geometry, fractions, decimals, percentages, exponents.
2. Reading Comprehension — ~36 questions, 51 minutes
• Read short passages and answer questions about main ideas, details, and inferences.
Scoring: Scaled score (usually 1–9). Most JATCs, including ALBAT, want a minimum of 4 to qualify for an interview. Higher scores = better ranking on the eligibility list.
How to Study Effectively (4–6 Week Plan)
Week 1–2: Build Foundations
• Review high-school level algebra (Order of Operations, Solving Equations, Factoring, Slope/Linear Equations).
• Practice reading comprehension with short passages.
Week 3–4: Timed Practice
• Take full-length practice tests under timed conditions.
• Focus heavily on your weak areas.
Week 5–6: Review & Peak
• Light review + rest before test day.
Math Topics to Master (Most Important)
• Solving for x in equations and inequalities
• Word problems (distance, work, mixtures)
• Number patterns / sequences
• Basic geometry (area, perimeter, angles)
• Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios
• Exponents and radicals
• Graphing simple lines
Pro Tip: Speed and accuracy matter more than perfection. Skip hard questions and return to them.
Reading Comprehension Strategy
• Read the passage first, then the questions.
• Focus on main idea and supporting details.
• Don’t bring in outside knowledge — base answers only on the text.

• Khan Academy (Algebra 1 & 2)
• Electrical Training Alliance sample questions (check their site)
• YouTube: “IBEW Aptitude Test Prep” or “NJATC Math Practice”
Paid (Highly Recommended if Serious):
• JobTestPrep or iPrep IBEW/NJATC packages (~$50–80) — closest to the real test.
• “Electrician Apprentice Aptitude Test” study guides on Amazon.
Test Day Tips
• Get good sleep the night before.
• Bring photo ID and any required paperwork.
• Eat a solid meal but avoid heavy foods.
• Stay calm — the test is designed to be passable with solid high-school math and reading skills.
• Manage your time — don’t get stuck on one question.
My Real-Talk Advice: Many strong candidates fail because they’re rusty on algebra or get nervous. Start studying early and take multiple timed practice tests. If you can comfortably pass practice tests scoring 70%+, you’re in good shape for ALBAT.
